The Many Roles of Automotive Sealants: They Do More Than Fill Seams

Most people realize that car sealant is excellent for filling gaps and spaces that might allow water into the interior. While there is no denying that’s the case, they are also great for many other tasks. So the next time you need to get one of these jobs done around the shop, be sure to keep auto sealants in mind.

Waterproofing

As mentioned earlier, this is the use that is often most associated with sealants. They can be applied to seams and around windshields to keep water out of a vehicle. They also prevent dirt and dust from getting inside. You should take care to choose a car sealant that is the correct viscosity for the job to avoid it dripping or running out of the seams.

Rust Protection

In addition to keeping water out of a vehicle, car sealant can also help keep it from causing damage to the undercarriage and exposed body components. A rubberized undercoat resists rust and corrosion. It also helps to minimize abrasive damage from road debris. Apply it directly to fenders, wheel wells, and frames to get the most benefit. When selecting a rubberized sealant, look for products that can be painted immediately to minimize wait time.

Thread Seals

Another use for sealants that often gets overlooked is a thread sealer. Automotive pipe sealants provide a secure grip and watertight seal on threaded connections. They are perfect for threaded fasteners that vibrations might otherwise loosen.

When choosing an automotive pipe sealant, ensure it has a low-locking strength to avoid trouble loosening the connection down the road. You’ll also want to ensure it won’t clog any filters or vents and that it provides lubrication to the fitting it is applied to.

Noise Dampening

An additional use that car sealants are especially well-suited to is noise dampening. This is referred to as liquid noise dampening; however, the sealant used can vary in texture. Brush-on and sprayable formulations are readily available and should be kept in stock at virtually every repair shop.

In addition to their effectiveness, sealants are also lighter and more adaptable than traditional automotive insulation panels. For those reasons, many auto manufacturers are turning to them to serve as primary noise dampeners over other types of insulation. In these cases, the car companies provide guidance for reapplying seam sealant, such as bead height and thickness, to ensure the original noise reduction is maintained after body work. This makes it especially important to verify guidelines for sealants before applying them, especially if you are working on an unfamiliar make or model of car.
