About Ko Yong-hui

Ko Yong-hui was born on June 26, 1952, in Osaka, Japan, to her Korean parents. Her Japanese name is Takada Hime.

Between 1961 and 1962, there was a repatriation program that made her family move to North Korea. Ko Yong-hui started working as a dancer in the early 1970s. She worked for Mansudae Art Troupe in Pyongyang.

Ko Yong-hui’s Family

Ko Yong-suk, Ko Yong-hui’s younger sister, sought asylum from the U.S. embassy in Bern, Switzerland. There Ko Yong-hui lived while taking care of Kim Jong-un back in the early days. He was the Supreme Leader of North Korea.

U.S. officials helped Ko Yong-suk and arranged her departure from the country. They left without consulting the South Korean officials.

Ko Yong-hui first met Kim Jong-il, former Supreme Leader of North Korea, in 1972. The previous leader had a son named Kim Jong-chul. He was Kim’s fourth child after Kim Hye-gyong, Kim Jong-nam, and Kim Sol-song; all from different mothers.

Kim Jong-un is the second child of Ko Yong-hui and Kim Jong-il next to Kim Jong-chul. Then, they had their third child, Kim Yo-jong.

Ko Yong-hui’s Death

On August 27, 2004, Ko Yong-hui was reported to have died in Paris due to an unspecific illness. There were speculations of her death because of cancer.

According to a report, she was treated in Paris during the spring of 2004. She flew back to Pyongyang and died when she fell into a coma.

About Ko Yong-suk’s

Ko Yong-suk was a senior Korean woman with conservative clothes. She managed a dry cleaning business with her husband. She spends her weekend pressing shirts and hemming pants.

She’s not any typical immigrant. Ko Yong-suk is an aunt of Kim Jong-un. He was the North Korean leader who threatened New York and wiped it out with a hydrogen bomb.

It was horrible after 18 years of defection from North Korea into the arms of the CIA. Ko Yong-suk lived an anonymous life in the United States with her husband, Ri Gang, and their children. From the top of North Korea, the family moved to the middle of America.

Ko and Ri decided to break their silence. They stopped for almost 20 hours just to talk with Washington Post reporters in New York City. The couple was so nervous after all the emerging from anonymity.

After all, the reporters already knew how North Korea was. They studied it for a living so they knew exactly why the couple had transferred.
