Yokozuna’s ring name references Japan’s highest rank in professional sumo wrestling. He was born Agatupu Rodney Anoa’i on 2 October 1966 in San Francisco, California. A member of the Anoa’i wrestling family, his cousins, who are well-known wrestlers, include Samu, Roman Reigns, The Rock, Umaga, Rosey, and Manu. The Usos were his first cousins, while Sika, Afa, and The Wild Samoans were his uncles. Yokozuna’s uncles trained him in the family business from a young age.
Yokozuna made his debut in the world of wrestling in 1984. Afa Anoa trained him. Although he represented Japan in his wrestling career, he was a Samoan American. Yokozuna’s first exposure was with the American Wrestling Association (AWA) as Kokina Maximus. He was billed as the biggest Samoan wrestler ever.
Yokozuna joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1992 through Vince McMahon. He appeared in the ring until 1999, always followed by his manager, Mr. Fuji, with a wooden bucket of salt while waving a Japanese flag. In the WWF, he was the winner of the 1993 Royal Rumble, a two-time WWWF World Heavyweight Champion, and a two-time WWF Tag Team Champion. Anoai died from pulmonary edema on 23 October 2000, three weeks past his 34th birthday. He died at the Moat House Hotel on Paradise Street in Liverpool while on tour for All-Star Wrestling.
