How A Pillow Affects Your Sleep

How A Pillow Affects Your Sleep

The signs might be obvious when you sleep on a bad mattress. You might observe a worn groove in your bed. If you are still sleeping on box springs, you might feel something picking up on your back. However, your mattress is not the only factor that plays into your capability to get a restful night’s sleep.

What about your pillow?

You often take pillows for granted. But they are one of the most crucial elements to your posture, comfort, and general health while sleeping. Also, like everything else you use to sleep, they can also wear out over time.

Thus, how are you supposed to tell if it’s time to replace your pillow?

The Importance of Proper Pillows

Keep in mind that your pillows serve numerous important roles as you sleep throughout the night.

  • Temperature – Pillows are conduits of temperatures. If you sleep on a non-breathable pillow, it can heat up throughout the night, leading to the discomfort that makes it challenging to sleep.
  • Cleanliness – Your pillow should also be clean. While changing the pillowcase regularly can keep it clean. Eventually, many bodily fluids, dust, microorganism, and oils can work their way into the pillow itself.
  • Comfort – Many people enjoy the individual feeling of laying their head on rather soft yet very supportive. If you have ever crashed after a tiring day of work, you understand how good a pillow can feel. That comfort is soothing and can help you fall and stay asleep.
  • Neck and back support – That’s probably the most obvious factor here. Take note that pillows are made to support your back and neck while you sleep. Your neck has a natural curve to it, and thus, lying down totally flat, you might feel some strain.

A supportive pillow will help keep your head elevated, so you do not experience any long-term neck issues. Also, you may utilize secondary pillows for support, depending on how you sleep.

For instance, you might keep a pillow flanked by your legs if you sleep on the side so the back stays straight throughout the night.

How to Find the Ideal Pillow

Are you in the market for a new pillow to change your old one? You might as well search for the best quality pillow. The following factors will help you pick the perfect pillow:

  • Materials and structure – Other pillows have a distinct type of structure that offers them an advantage in some way. For instance, some have breathable air channels, enabling the pillow to remain cool, or a special material that reduces or stops allergy issues.
  • Firmness – Various people will choose different levels of firmness. Try other pillows if you can and choose whether you like something more supportive or stiffer or softer, or more relaxing.
  • Placement and number – How many pillows do you like? Depending on what position you typically sleep in, it may be smart to adopt a second or even third pillow to offer other parts of your body extra support.
  • Other features – You may find pillows with extra features, like infused essential oils, to help you soothe as you drift to sleep.

Are you ready to replace your old pillow with one that can offer sufficient head and neck support?
