Encourage Your Child to Love Maths

How to Encourage Your Child to Love Maths?

According to several surveys, more than 40%  of Australian students fail to meet the strict national mathematics proficiency standards. This alarming statistic explains why nowadays parents are always looking for the best maths tutoring Brisbane or Melbourne. Kids need better tutors!

But here’s the thing; you can’t force intelligence onto someone. It needs to be nurtured and developed with the help of genuine interest. If your kids don’t love mathematics, they won’t excel at it no matter what.

So, before you go looking for the best tutor in the world, learn how to encourage your child to love maths below!

Explain the Use of Math in Real Life

Most students don’t take an interest in studies because they don’t see a point. It’s undebatable that the mathematics topics taught at school come in handy throughout our life.

But kids don’t see this because the school doesn’t make them see it that way. For them, probability and statistics are just probability and statistics – not techniques to calculate insurance risks and prices.

So, the best way to stimulate interest in math is to show the real-life use of the topics. Whenever you use math yourself or see someone else using it, discuss it with your kid and explain its usefulness.

Allow Them to Play Math Games

The penetration of technology in our everyday lives is inevitable. So, there is no point in rebelling and stopping your kids from playing video games. Instead, turn things around and use this for your benefit.

There are several math-based video games available. If your child enjoys playing, introduce them to these educational games. However, make sure the game is designed for his age level. Or else the child will completely lose interest.

Alternatively, if your kid is young, you can use math-based cartoons. For example, the Numberblocks is an amazing cartoon that helps strengthen the basic math principles of your child. You can stream it on Netflix or YouTube.

Involve Them in Budgeting

This is another way to demonstrate the purpose of math in real life. If your child doesn’t love math, involve them in your monthly budgeting and finance activities.

Even though this does not promote complex math, it includes money, and – perhaps – we can all agree that kids are thrilled to deal with money. This will encourage them to take an interest in math.

Enroll Them in STEM Programs

STEM is an abbreviation for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It is an approach to teaching that encourages genuine interest in these 4 fields. So, if your local area has STEM programs going on, get your child enrolled.

But make sure the program is like a summer camp that doesn’t put an additional burden on your kid. It should have activities designed in a fun way to promote STEM. Also, you must discuss the enrollment with your child before actually enrolling them.

Otherwise, your child won’t enjoy the thing at all. If your child doesn’t agree, maybe you can reach out to his friends’ parents and see whether their children will like to get enrolled in the STEM program too. No child can resist a summer camp when friends are there too!
