Preparing for the Exam

Before you can register for the North Carolina real estate exam, there are certain steps you need to complete.

  • You must undertake a 75-hour pre-license course. This will equip you with the fundamental knowledge to navigate the real estate industry.
  • You should then complete your background check. This is an essential step in ensuring the integrity of the industry.
  • You must submit your application to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission (NCREC). Usually, it takes about five days for your application to be approved.

Scheduling the Exam

Once your application is approved, you will receive an email notification to schedule your state exam. The cost to take or retake the exam is $56. It’s offered daily at various test centers located throughout North Carolina.

Understanding the Exam Structure

The North Carolina real estate exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions divided into two parts: a national and a state portion. You have 3.5 hours to answer all the questions. The national portion comprises 80 questions, while the state part consists of 40 questions. To pass, you must score at least 72% on the national and 73% on the state sections.

Studying for the Exam

The key to success in the North Carolina real estate exam is practice. Utilize real estate exam practice exams and flashcards to prepare for the state exam. Reviewing and understanding the concepts behind each question will significantly increase your chances of passing on the first try.

Taking the Exam

The North Carolina real estate exam must be taken personally at a PSI test center. These centers are conveniently located throughout North Carolina.

Retaking the Exam

Don’t lose heart if you don’t pass on your first attempt. You can retake the North Carolina real estate exam as often as needed. However, you must wait 24 hours between exam attempts and pay the registration fee each time. It’s also important to note that you must pass the exam within three years of completing your pre-licensing education.

After the Exam

Congratulations on passing the exam! The next step is to activate your license, which involves working under the supervision of a licensed broker-in-charge. This provides valuable on-the-job experience and allows you to apply the knowledge you’ve gained.
