Packing and Moving

Packing and Moving: What Should You Pack First?

Transitioning from one residence to another is comparable to solving a three-dimensional puzzle. The key is determining which part goes in which place and in which sequence.

This is not just about putting your stuff in boxes; it involves planning, giving importance to tasks, and most of all, knowing when to do them.

So, what is the correct sequence for packing when relocating? This is not just a conundrum for beginners. Even the experienced ones also struggle with figuring out where to start packing due to the uniqueness of each situation.

Positive update: With proper assistance, the packing procedure can change from a possible hassle to a seamless, orderly advancement. The subsequent useful packing suggestions will assist you in determining what to pack initially when relocating and what to leave for the last moments.

By the end, you’ll possess the skills to handle any task effectively, confidently and without the need to rush at the last minute (unless you thrive on that, of course).

Out-of-Season and Seasonal Clothing

As your move approaches in a couple of weeks, it’s a good opportunity to sort through your wardrobe and store away seasonal clothing that you’re not currently using.

When you are moving during the summer, make sure to begin packing your coats and jackets. If your relocation is during the winter, feel free to pack your shorts and tank tops. After finishing, you should still have your existing collection of clothes.

Reduce that to the things you intend to wear in the next two weeks and store any extra clothes you won’t use until after you move. If you organize well, you will have some clothes remaining to pack quickly in a suitcase or duffel bag after moving.

This also applies to organizing your shoe assortment. Select a few sets of shoes, making sure to include comfortable ones for moving day, and start packing the remaining items.

Go for the Storage Stuff

So, when starting to pack for a house move, many people are unsure where to begin. Here’s a useful suggestion: Start by preparing holiday decorations, gift-wrapping supplies, old baby clothes, unused furniture, and other items in storage.

If you aren’t using them now, you probably won’t need them before you move, correct? These items are also ideal for the rear section of your PODS moving container.

Now that you have determined what you should pack first when relocating, how do you go about packing it – especially the uniquely shaped holiday decorations?

According to the moving services from GMove Logistic, while they are in plastic containers, it is best to securely pack them in boxes instead of directly placing the plastic bins into your portable moving container.

Ensure delicate objects are wrapped in bubble cushioning roll or tissue, and when packing your box, use additional padding to fill any gaps. You can achieve this by adding extra packing materials or by utilizing soft items such as towels or linens.

The Fragile Items

If you’re currently in the process of moving, it’s unlikely that you’re hosting a dinner party, correct? We advise against storing away your regular dishes now, but it is a good idea to begin wrapping up your delicate china, crystal, silverware, and other items that are not used daily.

Make sure to clearly mark each fragile box, so that anyone who is moving or handling them is aware to do so with caution. When loading delicate boxes into a PODS container, make sure they are placed in a tight spot to avoid getting crushed from any direction.

The Guest Bedrooms

Guest bedrooms are not used often, so you can probably pack them up along with other rooms not frequently used. You may receive extra points if you take the initiative to dismantle beds and cover dressers now, although you might need assistance from out-of-town packers during the transition period between selling your current house and relocating to the new one.

If you can lift the rug in the guest bedroom, roll it up and use plastic wrap to secure it. It will be tempting to pile rugs at the bottom of your crate or moving vehicle, but this can be a challenging situation to navigate.

Box Up the Artwork, Books, and Decor

When choosing what to pack first when moving, this item may be prioritized higher if you would be greatly impacted by living in a home without decorations until moving day.

This is due to the fact that while artwork and home decor may be pleasing to the eye, they are not essential for daily living.

Get these items ready for packing two to three weeks before your moving date, or even sooner if you prefer. The books on your shelves follow the same principle. You can set aside one or two for amusement, but the rest should be packed away in boxes.
