Although the recent rise in remote working has enabled many people to embrace ‘workcations,’ the demand for an escape from everyday life remains as strong as ever. At some point, basically everybody wants a place to go where they can unwind without being disturbed. And nothing says “do not disturb” like an over-water villa.
You see them all over travel company marketing materials; luxurious bungalows stretching out over a beautiful light blue sea. Nothing symbolises escape and isolation quite like them. Yet they often seem unattainable, like you have to fly all the way around the world to find them. But the truth is that there are over-water villas in many places. Some are probably much nearer than you think.
Here are just a few of the global destinations where you can find them.
1. The Maldives
The classic travel brochure-worthy villas that you probably picture when you think about over-water villas are found in the Maldives. These are the ones that look like they are attached to desert islands with crystal clear seas and white sand. The Maldives comprise over 1,000 islands and more than 130 of these host holiday resorts. Many of them offer over-water villas. Some, like Pullman Resort Maldives, are operated by large international brands, but there are also some smaller private resorts. A stay in the Maldives can be pricey, but warm temperature is guaranteed and the beautiful scenery makes them ideal for a luxury vacation.
2. Switzerland
Warm temperatures might not be guaranteed, but spectacular views are if you choose to stay in a Swiss villa instead. With so many peaceful Alpine lakes nestled among the mountains, it is no surprise that people have thought of building places to stay on them. One example is the Hotel Palafitte on Lake Neuchatel, which gives guests the option to stay in one of 38 wooden villas on stilts over the lake. Each one features floor-to-ceiling windows for you to take in the breathtaking scenery.
3. Thailand
Thailand might have some beaches that give The Maldives a good run for their money, but they are not where you will find the best over-water villas. For those, you should head to Khao Sok National Park. That is where you will find Cheow Lan Lake, a 185 square kilometre area of turquoise water surrounded by jungles, cliffs, and forested mountains. There are several different floating villa resorts there which cater to different budgets. Whichever you choose, you will have to charter a boat to get there, but the journey is very scenic.
4. Tanzania
If you want the warm temperatures and clear waters of the Indian Ocean, then another great option is Tanzania, and specifically the Manta Resort in Zanzibar. The floating villas here are spaced far apart, and in fact have to be reached by swimming or sailing. And best of all, they have a glass-walled underwater room.
Conclusion
Over-water villas might not be the only way to obtain a period of undisturbed peace, but they are one of the most enjoyable. They are also found in more places than people realise. While Maldives resorts remain a firm favourite, there are other options if you do not like long flights or you prefer mountains to beaches.
