Basic Understanding of the Main Types

You might think power tools are the only game in town, but don’t overlook the humble hand tool. From hammers to handsaws, hand tools let you work with precision and control. Forget the noise and dust of power tools. Grab a hand tool and really feel the joy of craftsmanship. In this guide, we’ll explore the major categories of non-powered tools. You’ll learn which hand tools every beginning DIYer should have in their workshop. We’ll cover everything from screwdrivers to wrenches. By the end, you’ll be able to outfit your workspace with the essential manual tools to complete your projects. So put on your toolbelt and let’s get started on an appreciation for the art of hand tools.

Proper Use and Safety Tips

Hammers

Hammers come in different sizes and are designed for various purposes. The most common types are claw hammers for general work, ball peen hammers for metalwork, and sledgehammers for demolition. Hammers are essential for driving nails, pounding chisels, and shaping metal.

Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers are designed to drive screws. The two main types are flathead and Phillips head. It’s best to have multiple sizes of each for different screw sizes. An electric screwdriver or drill can make driving screws quicker, but manual screwdrivers give you more control and are necessary for tight spaces.

Pliers

Pliers are designed to grip, turn, cut and bend wire or small parts. The most common types are slip joint pliers for general work, needle nose pliers for tight areas or electronics, and cutting pliers which have a cutting edge for wire. Pliers are very useful for any project involving wire or where extra gripping power is needed.

Wrenches

Wrenches are designed to turn nuts and bolts. The most common are open-end wrenches, box wrenches, and adjustable wrenches. It’s best to have wrenches in multiple sizes, including metric and imperial. Wrenches provide the mechanical advantage and grip needed to tighten or loosen even stuck or rusted nuts and bolts. No toolbox is complete without an assortment of wrenches.

With the major tool types covered, you’ll have the basics to handle many common tasks. Be sure to learn proper safety and techniques for each tool to complete your projects efficiently and avoid injury. The more you use them, the more intuitive it will become!

Top 10 Essential Hand Tools for Home Use

Knowing how to properly and safely use hand tools is essential for any do-it-yourselfer. Selecting the right tool for the job is key. Don’t use a wrench when you need a screwdriver or pliers when you need a hammer. Using the wrong tool can lead to damaged materials, slips and falls, or even injuries.

Once you have the right tool,  make sure it’s in good working order. Dull blades, loose handles, or damaged parts can be dangerous. Tighten, sharpen or replace anything that’s loose, dull or broken before getting started.

When using cutting tools like knives, chisels or saws,  work slowly and carefully. Pay attention to the direction the sharp edge is facing and apply firm pressure. Keep tools at a 45-degree angle for the best results.

For pounding tools such as hammers, choose a solid work surface and hold the tool at the end of the handle. Bring the hammer up and behind your head, then swing down with control, hitting the center of the target. Let the hammer do the work – don’t overswing.

With tools that grip or turn like pliers, wrenches and screwdrivers, grasp the insulated handle firmly and pull or push in short strokes. Apply steady pressure and avoid over-tightening. These tools can easily slip or strip materials if misused.

By choosing the proper tools, inspecting them before use and applying safe techniques, you’ll complete your do-it-yourself projects efficiently and avoid injury. With regular practice of these essential skills, you’ll build your confidence and be crafting and repairing in no time!
