small bedroom look great

Practical tips to make your small bedroom look great

Do you feel restricted by your small bedroom? Perhaps worries about clutter and feeling cramped are disturbing your recommended 7-9 hours of slumber. But with the right design ideas, knowhow and techniques, your small bedroom could become a welcoming, restful retreat from the outside world.

They don’t have to mean breaking the bank or retraining as a handyperson either. Thousands of us visit hospital with tool-related injuries each year, but most of these design tips don’t demand serious skills, equipment or time.

Below, discover five practical tips for maximising your small bedroom.

  • Rethink the layout
  • Go multifunctional

Keep it light

If your bedroom is dark and dingy, simply consider how you can lighten it up. Aim to let in plenty of natural light for starters, keeping window dressings airy and unfussy. Retractable blackout blinds are a straightforward solution.

Make sure to use a simple, uplifting colour scheme too. That doesn’t mean you have to go all white though; try half-and-half painted walls or add splashes of colour through rugs, prints and other accessories.

Maximise storage

In cramped conditions, your storage needs to work extra hard for you. A high-impact option is made-to-measure furniture such as a fitted wardrobe that goes from floor to ceiling and around awkward spaces.

Add open shelves to other walls to maximise vertical space, creating curated displays while freeing up your floor.

Hang mirrors

Mirrors are great at creating the illusion of extra space, helping to bounce light around the room while visually doubling the space you’re relaxing in.

Choose a style that suits your aesthetic, from ornately framed antiques to quirky modern pebble mirrors.

Beyond just wall-mounted options, consider how your furniture choices can incorporate reflective surfaces to further brighten a compact space. Integrating stylish dressing tables with smart storage allows you to combine a dedicated grooming station with a piece that actively enhances the room’s natural light.
These units often feature built-in mirrors and sleek finishes that prevent the area from feeling heavy or cluttered. By choosing a design that offers both elegance and organization, you create a functional focal point that serves multiple purposes without sacrificing precious floor space.

Rethink the layout

If your small bedroom fundamentally doesn’t feel like it works, you may need to rethink the layout. Positioning the majority of furniture on just one wall will give you extra floor space elsewhere.

Don’t be afraid to get ruthless with what you keep in there too. Do you really need two nightstands, for example?

Go multifunctional

Finally, opting for multifunctional furniture can save you plenty of space too. Ditch a traditional headboard for one with storage and a surface area for your brews and books. Alternatively, transform your dressing table into a desk when you need it.

A comfy day or sofa bed can work wonders too, providing seating in the daytime while giving you back some floor space.

Could any of these tips help transform your small bedroom from cramped to cosy?
