A quilt is so much more than just fabric pieced together, it is a work of art. And as with any art form, there are a myriad of techniques that a quilter can use to achieve a specific look for the project. One of these techniques that will drastically change the look of any quilt is layering. This will add depth and dimension to the project when using fabrics and creative stitching.
Anatomy of a Quilt
The traditional construction of a quilt is made up of 3 layers: top layer, wadding layer (adds warmth to the quilt), and the backing. Layering these together will create a basic quilt. From this point, creative stitching and fabric techniques will bring to life a beautiful quilted piece that can be enjoyed for years to come.
Stitching
The stitching that is used on the quilt will add texture, dimension and pull the project together.
- Big Stitch Quilting– The use of bigger thread and longer stitches create more prominent lines and will give the quilt a folk-art feel. This technique creates a different texture than traditional stitching.
- Dense Quilting – This technique is for those that appreciate a more intricate quilt with a texture-rich surface. These lines can be spirals, pebbles, criss-cross or stippling. The more quilting lines that are added will result in a more “crinkle” the more it is washed.
- Trapunto Quilting – This method will allow the quilter to create puffy, raised designs by adding extra batting to certain areas of the quilt. The result is a sculpted, dramatic, three-dimensional quilt.
Fabrics
Utilizing different types of fabrics will result in dimension and depth for a one-of-a-kind look. The fabrics that are used to create a project are up to the discretion of the quilter. It is important to remember to use high quality fabrics. If a quilter is using mixed fabrics, make sure that they are of the same weight. This will help to maintain the integrity of the fabrics that are being used.
- Wovens – These fabrics are uniques due to their weave. This creates an intricate, yet subtle impact to your quilt top. Depending on the weave and color, the finished project could be rustic, soft or sophisticated.
- Linen – The uneven weave and natural fibers create a warm and earthy feel to any quilt. The use of linen gives the project and instant texture and dimension.
- Chambray and Denims – These fabrics can add a casual, yet sturdy feel to any quilt. Projects that use these fabrics are perfect for quilts that will be used more frequently because of the durability of the denims.
- Velvet and Corduroy – Projects that are more luxurious will find that the use of these fabrics will add a level of plush and softness that cannot be found by using woven or linen fabrics. While these fabrics are more difficult to use, if utilized sparingly or as blocks, will enhance the overall look of the project.
Layering a quilting project will take skill and determination. The end result is one of beauty and lasting memories that can be shared by many generations to come.
