Things You Should Always Do When Hiring a Vehicle

Things You Should Always Do When Hiring a Vehicle

There are a number of reasons why people rent vehicles. Many people use them when travelling to far-flung places. They don’t want to drive all the way there in their own car, but they still want to see things that are not easily accessible by walking or public transport.

Others are given courtesy vehicles to help them go about their lives and business while their own vehicle is being repaired. In any case, there are certain sensible precautions that people should take when driving a vehicle that does not belong to them.

This quick guide will outline a few of the important and prudent things everybody should do when borrowing a vehicle.

Things to do before you drive away

Whether you are leasing a vehicle as part of a not at fault truck hire agreement or a holiday package, there are a few things that it is always sensible to do which will make sure you are not unfairly blamed for any issues later when you return it.

  • Check the damage records: Vehicles which are used regularly will, over time, display some minor wear and tear. Both inside and outside the vehicle, damage such as scuff marks, scratches, cracks, and dents will start to be visible.

A legitimate rental firm should have a paper record of all these, and it should be given to you with the handover documents when you pick up the vehicle. If it is not, you should insist on seeing it.

  • Take photographs: Go through the items on the existing damage record and check that it is accurate. Then, you will want to photograph any additional damage that you notice.

Before you drive away, make sure the rental firm adds your photos to its records or makes an official written note of the additional damage.

  • Be thorough: If it is dark, ask the staff to move the car somewhere brighter or shine a torch so that you can see. Regardless of whether there is visible damage, take pictures of all sides of the car, the lights, the windscreen, tyres, and the fuel gauge and mileage indicator on the dashboard.

Before you return the vehicle:

After you have hopefully enjoyed a safe and smooth driving experience, there are a few things you will want to be sure to do before you return the vehicle too.

Wash the car: This will make the next step easier.

  • Inspect it again: Check the same areas as before. If the existing damage has got worse, or there is new damage, report it immediately. Take photographs and make sure it is recorded accurately by the rental firm.
  • Clean the interior: Gather up your belongings and throw out any rubbish. Use a vacuum cleaner or brush to remove dust and dirt. Wipe down hard surfaces.
  • Fill the tank: Most firms will bill you for this if it is not done first. Do it yourself to make sure you get the best price.

Vehicle hire in Australia is covered by a number of ‘consumer guarantees.’ It is important to check that your vehicle satisfies these and to return it in the best possible condition. The tips in this article will help you do both and make sure nothing important is overlooked.
