Mortimer j. Buckley is an American business executive and chief executive officer of The Vanguard Group from 2018 to 2024. Buckley joined Vanguard in 1991 as an assistant to the founder John C Bogle and was promoted to Chief Information Officer from 2001 to 2006. He became the head of the Retail Investor Group and in 2013, he became Chief Investment Officer after Gus Sauter retired.
Vanguard’s Board of Directors elected Buckley to take over after F William McNabb III as Chief Executive Officer starting in January 2018. He stepped down as CEO at the end of 2024, this marked the end of his 33-year career at Vanguard and a record 80% increase in the investment manager’s $9 trillion assets in six years.

Mortimer Joseph Buckley, well known as Tim, was born on April 26 1969 to Marilyn and Mortimer John Buckley a chief of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cardiac Surgical Unit. He went to Belmont Hill School and graduated from Harvard College with a BA degree in Economics. He earned an MBA degree from Harvard Business School. He has three other siblings Kathleen, Kara, and Deirdre. Buckley is married and lives with his family and three children live in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Buckley went to Massachusetts General Hospital for his surgical training and spent two years working in a clinical research fellowship in the Clinic of Heart Surgery at the National Institute of Health working with Dr Andrew Morrow. After the training in 1966, he returned to the general hospital cardiac surgical staff and worked there all through his career until 1998 when he retired. He was known at the hospital to be a socially charming, complex personality, and an intellectual often described as ‘larger than life’. During his twenty-five years as chief of the cardiac surgical unit, the residency was always full.
He helped expand the cardiac surgical programs at Bet Israel Hospital, the University of Athens, the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, and Mount Auburn Hospital. He was an intense trainer, competitor, and mentor on cardiac surgical pathologies with over 70 cardiac surgeons graduating from his training to become professors and chiefs running their surgical training programs. During his retirement dinner, 69 of his 70 students showed up to show their appreciation.
Dr Buckley was a religious family man married to Marilyn who was a big support system working to sustain a cardiac surgical program in Boston. The two were together for over forty-five years with four children Kathleen, Deirdre, Kara, and Tim, and ten grandchildren. He was a proud father who instilled discipline and religion in his family. Outside the hospital, he was a charming kind person who loved to tell stories, play golf, and tennis, and host friends and family. His last years were difficult as he developed myeloma a disease that was painful and cut his retirement. He died on November 24 2007 in his home in Osterville on Cape Cod at the age of 75.
