How to Make Any Room Feel More Spacious

How to Make Any Room Feel More Spacious

Do you feel like your home is a little small or maybe just a few of the rooms seem too restrictive? There are great ways to make the house feel bigger without having to build an addition, and we are sharing some of those here. This is not a comprehensive list, but it should start you off in the right direction and give you some ideas that will help.

Get Rid of Unneeded Items

Clutter makes any room feel smaller. If you have a bunch of unnecessary items clogging up the space in a room, then getting rid of them is going to make a big visual impact. You won’t have more space in the room after taking those items out, but you will have more room to move around.

This is the simplest and most straightforward method of making any room feel bigger. You can get rid of unwanted items by storing them away, selling them, trashing them, or giving them to friends. In any room that feels too crowded or too small, just look around and assess whether you actually need everything in there. Would it be better to move some items elsewhere or to get rid of them entirely?

It’s up to you how you want to declutter, but there are a number of ways to do it, and any of them will benefit you by making your rooms look more spacious. Try decluttering in a few rooms to see how well it works for you and benefit from the added sense of space and the cleaner lines.

Use Lighter Colors

A good paint job can do wonders for the space in any room, especially if you use lighter colors. The benefit of painting with white or pastels or other light colors is that they reflect light very well. So, if you have good lighting inside the room or you have windows that allow in natural light, then light-colored paint will reflect that light well and make the space look roomier.

This is a trick of the light and a trick of your perception, but it really works. You will feel like you have more space in any room if you have implemented brighter, lighter colors that reflect light well. If you want spacious rooms and it is time to update the paint in these rooms, try lighter colors to bring in that light and to make the spaces feel much roomier.

Rearrange Furniture and Other Items

Did you know that the arrangement of furniture in a room can help make it look roomier or more crowded? It’s true, and it makes sense if you think about it. When you have furniture placed away from the walls, it obstructs your passage through the room more. You end up with less maneuvering room, so the space feels more claustrophobic.

When you move furniture up against the walls, that gives you more space to work with. If your room is already small and feeling tight, then having furniture in the middle or spaced too far from the wall can really restrict your sense of space there. It is helpful to rearrange furniture so that you can move easily through the room and so that there is as much usable space as possible.

When furniture is slightly away from the walls, there may not be enough room to pass behind the furniture, and that is wasted space. When you push furniture snugly up against each other or up against the walls, you are better utilizing your available space, which is absolutely essential in smaller rooms.

Have Rooms Kept Clean

If there is anything out of place in a room, it can look a bit smaller. Untidiness creates clutter and makes rooms feel less spacious. Clean rooms look tidy and spacious, so you may want to have your room cleaned often to make them feel like they have more room than they really do. We recommend expert cleaning in Queens that can make sure that your rooms are as clean as possible.

The cleaner the rooms look, the roomier they will feel, and that is simply a fact of how your brain functions. The brain feels less stressed when the surrounding environment is tidy, organized, and clean. Once you eliminate the dust and dirt and stains from any space, it feels like there is more room there, and that is why we advise cleaning your home often.

You may not have much space to work with, but if you can keep that space looking clean, you won’t feel as trapped and boxed in or limited by the space that is available to you.

Add Better Lighting

This tip may take some work, but it can be well worth it. Think about the visual space that a room has when it is filled with shadows. Those shadows make a room feel smaller than it is, blocking off parts of the room for your vision and tricking your mind into seeing a lack of space where there may be plenty of space. You can fix that by adding a decent lighting setup in the room.

This can be as simple as buying a lamp for your nightstand or countertop, but you could install lighting as well. Before you purchase any kind of lighting setup, think about how that lighting fixture will cast light throughout the room. Will It provide enough light? Will it get rid of shadows? Will it put light where you want it to be?

Adding some lighting to a room can brighten it up, of course, and that adds to the roominess of the space. Try it for yourself and see. Just changing out the bulb in your current lamps for something that is brighter and more powerful can make such a difference. You will feel like you have more room, and you will get rid of some of the shadows in the room.

We hope that our tips help you as you try to make your space feel more spacious. If they do, let us know, please.
