What to Look for When Buying a Rug

Below are important things to consider when searching for Sydney rugs online.

1. Shape and Size

The first consideration is the rug’s shape and size. You want something that fits, big enough yet leaves enough floor visible between its edges and the walls. Don’t go for one that is so small that it looks out of place.

Ensure you take measurements of the length and width of your room before buying a rug. Then, reduce both dimensions by one to two feet to arrive at an appropriate-sized piece for the space.

2. Material and Style

Material and style determine the aesthetic appeal of your rug. The ideal choice of material depends on your lifestyle and the room you intend to place the rug.

The most common rug materials include:

  • Natural fibres, such as cotton, jute, silk, sisal, and wool. These are comfortable and durable. On the downside, they’re expensive and need professional cleaning.
  • Synthetic fibres, such as acrylic, polyester and polypropylene. These are cheap, easy to clean and stain resistant. However, they get damaged easily.
  • Artificial silk, such as bamboo silk, banana silk, and viscose. These are very cheap and excellent at concealing dirt. However, their high absorbency makes them vulnerable to water and oil spills.

There are various styles to pick from. You can go with a bohemian or contemporary look. If you are more laid back, a natural or traditional style is best. Still, you can mix and match different styles to obtain the best results.

3. Pile

The pile of a rug is the density or thickness of its fabric. Generally, fine and intricate rugs have a lower pile than coarse pieces.

Experts recommend installing low pile rugs for high traffic rooms like the kitchen. High pile rugs are more plush, making them suitable for living rooms and bedrooms.

4. Maintenance and Cleaning

Rugs are meant to be stepped on, so they get dirty quite often. Thus, you must consider maintenance and cleaning before purchasing one.

The material used to make a rug will determine how often you clean it. Here is a quick guide on how to clean different rug types:

  • Cotton and silk: these stain easily due to high absorbency. It’s advisable to hire a professional to prevent worsening the stains by trapping them inside the fibres.
  • Synthetic fibres: these get dirty quickly because they absorb dirt and oil. Use a spot cleaner or a vacuum to remove stains.
  • Wool: apply lanolin or other natural oils to prevent penetration of spills. Use blotting to remove excess, then use a toothbrush to remove stains. Avoid scrubbing, as it can damage the fibres.

5. Rug Pad

Lastly, you need a rug pad. Rug pads prevent accidental slips and prevent damage to the floor by cushioning heavy furniture. They also extend your rug’s lifespan.

High-traffic rooms like the bathroom and kitchen require pads with a solid grip. Contrarily, living rooms and bedrooms need cushioned rug pads to provide extra comfort.

Conclusion

Choosing a rug might be difficult, given that there are plenty of choices. Ultimately, it comes down to your taste and preferences and what fits the room. That said, you mustn’t rush your decision – remember, rugs are pivotal to your room’s overall aesthetic and feel.
