Choosing The Right Roofing Material For Your New Build

Choosing The Right Roofing Material For Your New Build

Are you planning to build a home from the ground up? Or are you looking for information for a different build that you are planning?

One of the core things to consider is the material that the roof will be made of. It seems simple, but there are a lot of factors to think about that go beyond what is the most common or accessible.

So, if you are a bit stuck on whether to go for asphalt, shingles, or even metal roofing, read on.

Durability

All roofing materials are designed to be durable. After all, the roof is the first part of the home that will encounter harsh weather conditions, and it has to have an average lifespan of fifteen to twenty-five years. Of course, there are some roof materials that are more durable than others, with metal probably being at the top of the durability chain. So, even though it was once considered unconventional, if you want to have a long-lasting roof on your build, it may be worth contacting a metal roofing contractor to see if this is the right option.

Roofing Configuration

Is this a roof for an extension, which may be flat, or is it the roof on the top of a house, and will need to be slanted?

The material used to create the roof will have a direct impact on the design of the roof and its shape. Metal roofs are suitable for both flat and slanted roofs, whereas asphalt and tiled roofs are suited for slanted roofs. Luckily, there are many different materials to choose from, so make sure you do your research into which one suits the shape of the roof you want to build.

Costs

Of course, cost is going to be a huge part of choosing the roofing material for your build.

Asphalt shingles are the most affordable, so are the most widely used, and synthetic slate or solar tiles are the most expensive. If you want an energy-efficient option built into the roof, the latter is ideal and offers long-term cost benefits, but for standard builds, tiles are simple and affordable.

Aesthetic Appeal

It may seem odd, but the look of the roof can also impact the materials you choose to create it.
Many people who are opting for a more contemporary exterior look use metal roofing options, as this has the steel-grey chic that also looks somewhat rustic. It can be tough to know how any material will look as a roof, so if you are hiring contractors to build the property for you, it can be worth running some visual simulations to see which material matches the visual look that you want.

Purpose of the Building

Is the building going to be a home, or is it going to be a garage?

If you are planning to build a home, cottage, or even a garden room, then the focus of the roof should be durability and safety. If you are planning to build a garage or another home extension that will not be used as often, then you can afford to look at options that are cheaper and may not have the same level of safety or durability.
